Contributing to the evaluation of hydraulic pedotransfer functions: A case study from Central Europe

Simulating soil water movement and solute transport in the unsaturated zone requires knowledge about hydraulic soil properties. Soil information collected during field studies or from soil profile databases often only provide physicochemical soil properties. However, hydraulic properties can be estimated from basic soil data by using pedotransfer functions (PTF).Various PTF exist to estimate model parameters of soil water retention and hydraulic conductivity. Uncertainty exists regarding the accuracy of estimated hydraulic parameters at a field level due to differences of PTF in methodology as well as spatial coverage and size of underlying datasets.
